Road Schooling - Day 6 - 3/20/20

This final full day began as normal with clear skies and a full sunrise.  Lessons were completed, and a breakfast of pancakes and bacon & eggs was enjoyed.  It was then off to McD's for our few hours of daily internet access.  Today before lunch we took a little walk around the area to look at decor.  And today's lunch marked the 5th straight day of cheeseburgers.  What was different was that the self service drink machine was off limits.

On the way back we filled up with gas at the Seaview Mobil who was selling regular gas for $3.149 per gallon compared to the Texaco at $3.349 per gallon.

Back at camp the kiddos mounted up their bikes and I packed a couple kites to try flying them.  At the beach it was simply too windy to fly kites, but the kiddos were thrilled to do some more rock climbing. There were 3 prospectors hunting for gold today. We abandoned the beach and took a different route back to our campsite.  They did a bit more schoolwork and had some iPad time until we decided to make another attempt at flying kites.  Alas, it was unsuccessful due to high winds.  On their ride back, Jakob crashed into his sister and scratched his knee and elbow.  After a little first aid, we spent the rest of the evening in camp eating dinner, watching the news as well as a press conference on upcoming Oregon social distancing measures as well as a little Jeopardy followed by s'mores.  A final session of cards was enjoyed before all prepared for bed.  Unfortunately Jakob seemed to have a sugar high and couldn't get to sleep.  So he worked on some homework.

It's been an interesting week practicing social distancing while camping and also road schooling a 7 and a 9 year old who have not only printed materials but online drills and tests in an environment with limited cell or internet access.  But all in all it's been a success with the kiddos being totally engaged.  We don't know if we'll be able to do any more of this with pressing stay at home measures because of the Covid-19 crisis.  The new trailer has worked well, but is a bit cozy with four people.  We've found that the grey water tank is only good for about 3-4 days with all the hand washing and dish washing.  All the systems have worked fine.

Tomorrow morning we'll pack up and head home and follow the social distancing orders.  Who knows if we can continue camping?
